What is the Single Most Important Upgrade To Make Your Computer Run Faster?

My name is Bob Kahles and I own Bob's Onsite Computer Repair in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have personally installed this upgrade for literally hundreds of my customers and witnessed their computer's performance and speed increase anywhere from two to five times what is was before this upgrade was made in the majority of cases. I bet you'd like to have your computer running two to five times faster than it does now! So what is the one piece of hardware you can have upgraded to get this kind of performance increase? Continue reading and I'll tell you.

Most desktop and laptop computers owned or bought today already have enough memory in them for the average user. They also have a decent enough processor in them. The major limiting factor in today's computers is their hard drive. An average of 90%-95% of all my customer's computers have what I call old platter-style hard drives in them and this is what is limiting their system more than any other single piece of hardware in their entire computer! The platter-style hard drives mainly come in two speeds. There's the 5400rpm and the 7200rpm. (RPM stands for revolutions per minute) The 5400rpm hard drive is the slowest of the two. The 7200rpm hard drive is the fastest of the two and is the only hard drive I install in my customer's computers when they don't want to upgrade to the best of the best. If you have either of these in your desktop or laptop computer, you definitely want to keep reading!

This brings me to The Single Most Important Upgrade to Make Your Computer Run Faster! A Solid State Drive, or SSD for short, is the single most important upgrade you can make to your computer in most cases! The platter-style hard drives have a needle that reads data off a round plate, or platter, which spins around. As the platter spins around, the needle has to constantly move back and forth over and over in order to read the data you are trying to access. With a Solid State Drive, all data can randomly be accessed at the same speed. I'll get into the numbers shortly so you can see just how much faster a SSD is compared to the platter-style drives. Right now, there are two different types of SSD hard drives. There is the standard 2.5" SSD and there is the newest technology of SSD called a M.2 drive. The M.2 SSD are the king of the crop but are much more expensive and you need to either have a M.2 socket on your motherboard or you'd have to buy a M.2 adapter which usually plugs into a PCI Express slot on your motherboard.

Finally, lets get into the numbers and see why and just how much faster an SSD is compared to the old platter-style drives. A 5400rpm hard drive supports read and write speeds of about 100/MBs(Megabytes per second). A 7200rpm hard drive supports read and write speeds of about 120/MBs. An average 2.5" Solid State Drive supports read speeds of 450/MBs and write speeds of 300/MBs, two to three times faster than a 7200rpm hard drive! A Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD supports read speeds of up to 2,500/MBs and write speeds of up to 1,500/MBs!
If we break this down to lamen terms, the average SSD will outperform the old platter-style hard drives by about 3 times on average or we can say that an SSD is about three times faster than 5200rpm and 7200rpm hard drives. The Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD is about 20 times faster than the 5200rpm and 7200rpm platter drives and is about 4 times faster than an average 2.5" SSD!

Hopefully, now you can see why I say that the single most important upgrade you can make to your computer is to upgrade to at least a 2.5" Solid State Drive.
If you aren't comfortable working on your own computer, I can personally come to you if you live in the Greater Cincinnati area and install a Solid State Drive in your desktop or laptop.
